The Filipino Association of Nova Scotia (or FANS) is a voluntary, non-profit society. Informally organized on December 24, 1964 and founded on August 9, 1968. FANS finally became a society on June 10, 1974. The society's main objective is to foster social and friendly relations among members while promoting mutual understanding between Filipinos and people of all nations. From the early 1960's to the present, the Filipino community in Nova Scotia has been part of the continuing evolution of Canadian Society. We acknowledge that Canada's multicultural diversity is an important part of what it means to be Canadian. Therefore, the Filipino Association of Nova Scotia respects the cultural rights and freedom of all Canadians. The Filipino Association of Nova Scotia successfully received a grant from the Federal Government to establish a Filipino Language School. The school itself was an active member of the Heritage Language Association of Nova Scotia until the school's closing after 6 years of operation.
FANS participates
in many local cultural events and media, as well as attending events
nationally. FANS celebrates Canada Day with a grand picnic attended
by families and members. Annually participating in the Multicultural
Festival of Nova Scotia, FANS has sponsored professional entertainers
to perform cultural presentations on stage such as "The Sarsuela"
and "Rosalia in Concert". This association has received
first place awards for overall presentations consecutively from
1995-1997, then in 1999, 2002 to 2004. Appreciation and thanks go to all who have involved themselves through the years with building the association to what it is today. |
